earning $450,000. it also delays spending cuts for at least two months. congress will have another standoff to deal with next month when lawmakers must raise the $16.4 trillion federal borrowing limit so the government can keep paying its bills. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. >> looking at that clock, it's staggering. the nonpartisan congressional budget office says the bill will add almost $4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next ten years. one virginia democrat who voted against the bill explained his decision. jim moran of virginia's eighth district released the following statement shortly aft bill was passed. quote, i've been hoping to cast a ballot for a balanced deal which addresses both long run fiscal issues and the artificial short-term crisis created by the budget control act. the bill before us today is wholly inadequate. it leaves our country with three more fiscal cliffs to negotiate over the next three

months. i'm deeply concerned by the long-term consequences of this hastily crafted agreement. i cannot in good conscience support this legislation. that from virginia congressman jim more ran. -- >> jim moran. lawmakers from both parties are speaking out against the decision by house republican leaders to end the congressional session without voting on an aid bill for victims of superstorm sandy. new york republican peter king said the decision was indefensible. maryland democrat steny hoyer said he was deeply disappointed. last friday the senate approved a $60.4 billion sandy relief meetings. the house appropriations committee drafted a smaller bill. a vote by the full house hasn't been expected before the body recessed. secretary of state hillary clinton is still in a new york hospital getting treated for that blood clot. doctors found the clot in a vein behind her right ear. the 65-year-old clinton did not suffer any stroke or brain damage. she's expected to make a full

recovery. doctors familiar with this type of clot say it is unlikely that it developed as a side effect of her recent concussion when she fell at her home. secretary clinton was also treated for a blood clot back in the 1990's when she was first lady. that one was in her leg. you may kiss your spouse. that's the phrase that will be used more and more in maryland now, now that same-sex marriage is legal in the state. the first weddings were performed on new year's day. >> more than a half dozen of couples who wednesday to -- who lined up to wednesday at a waterfront inn. >> reporter: at the black walnut point inn, couples nervously prepared for the ceremonies and wedding photographers scrambled. on the lawn a couple who wednesday at midnight after a 15-year relationship and previous marriages to men came to cheer on the others in just married hats. >> it was magical. >> we're gathered here today to celebrate love, the love that has been freely given to us. >> reporter: clayton and wayne

weddings that are happening today, by the time it's all over here on black walnut point, there will have been seven same-sex couples who have tied the knot on the first day it's legal in maryland. scott broom, 9news now. >> maryland's first same-sex marriage ceremonies took place just after midnight new year's day. baltimore opened city hall at 12:30 a.m. to allow several gay couples to get married. mayor stephanie rowelings blake who is also an ordained minister presided over the ceremonies. a candlelight ridge jill was last -- vigil was held last night for an officer killed in the line of duty. chris yung was responding to a car accident when he was killed. he was 35 years old and the father of three young children. investigators are still searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed an oxon hill church. the first wesleyan church went

up in flames early yesterday morning. no one was hurt. at this point investigators believe the fire was caused by a midnight power outage at the building. they say that's possibly what caused it. police are still looking for the person who shot out a window at a prince william county school. these are surveillance pictures from inside kilbe elementary on horner ridge road in woodbridge. the shooting took place between 9:30 friday night and 8:15 saturday morning. if you recognize the man in this picture, please call police. it is 4:35. here's a look at some other things making news now. seven people were killed in northwest pakistan when gunmen ambushed a van killing five female teachers and two health workers. the teachers were on their way home from a community center when the gunmen stopped the van and pulled a young boy from the van and opened fire. no group has claimed responsibility for this attack.

tomorrow the students from newtown, connecticut will find their old backpacks, old desks at a new school. the survivors of the shooting massacre at sandy hook elementary will return to class in the neighboring town of monroe tomorrow. the state of pennsylvania is planning to file a lawsuit against the ncaa. they reacted to the jerry sandusky scandal by taking away wins, reducing scholarships and temporarily banning penn state from competing in the post- season. it includes a $90 million fine -- $60 million fine. state and federal lawmakers have raised objections to the money being spent outside pennsylvania. the state's lawsuit will argue the money should remain in pennsylvania. 4:36. breezy and cool is what you can expect when you head outside. olga is in for howard and has the details coming up.

better by 23. nearly one million workers are getting a raise. the minimum wage is going up in ten states. this increase is between 10 cents and 35 cents an hour. some workers will make hundreds more this year because of that boost. electronic books continue to gain popularity. a poll finds 23% of people read e-books. a 7% jump in one year. those numbers are only expected to increase this year because of the kindles, the nooks, all those other e-reader books being such a popular holiday gift. a scottish business is giving a whole new meaning to the term drinking and driving. the company keltic renewables is turning whiskey waste into fuel. scientists take the whiskey leftovers from the whiskey making process and convert it into butte knoll. butte knoll like ethanol can be blended with gasoline. you pour it into your car and

it is 4:45. olga breese is in for howard bernstein. she has our wednesday forecast. >> looks like we're starting off overcast this morning. we had a little bit of cloud cover that's really helped us out with our temperatures. right now most of us are in the middle and upper 30s so nobody really dipping below freezing at the moment because ever the cloud cover. take your sunglasses, though, because later on today, we're going to break out with some brilliant sunshine by about midday. we're also going to whip up a bit of a breeze. we had a front move on through to the south and that will whip up some more winds behind it as things progress into the afternoon today. here's your day planner. mainly clear skies by midday. we'll move out of the 30s. have all of that sunshine. get us to about 38 at reagan national. that should happen between the 3:00 and 4-g hours. -- 4:00 hours. then we start to slide back down overnight tonight. tonight will be partly cloudy. it will be a bit of a chill but not quite as cool as we've been

experiencing. here's all the moisture i mentioned. we're seeing a wintry mix from ocean city heading off toward the eastern shore. current temperatures are in the 30s. we have 38 at reagan national but not much colder up toward frederick. below freezing for hagerstown. yes, a very chilly start to your wednesday morning. feeling like the lower range 30s all around so be prepared if you're going to be stepping out this morning or even spending any time outdoors. the high temperatures, though, not too bad. we normally see about 40 degrees this time of the year. so we're within range. we'll get into the upper range 30s for inside the beltway. slightly cooler off toward the north along the i-70 corridor but we're still going to pull in more moisture from the south as we start to shift our winds southwesterly as we head into the remainder of the workweek forecast. here's the timing of the cloud cover removal this morning. clears us out very quickly. around 10:00 to 11:00 we'll see the sunshine last into the

evening hours. then we'll pull in some partly cloudy skies as we head into the overnight tonight. with the clearing skies and the breezy winds starting to diminish, that means the overnight temperatures are going to dip down again. a very chilly night as we head into thursday morning but the good news, we continue the sunshine well into thursday afternoon. so here's what you need to know over the next 48 hours. dry conditions today, tomorrow, and friday. we're keeping it as a code or i should say as a green weather alert with the sunshine continuing into friday where we're partly cloudy but still not too bad. chilly conditions, though, looking at about 28 degrees. seven-day forecast is not cooperating but i can tell you that things are looking good into the weekend. we'll see a high of only the upper 30s to near 40 degrees for the big redskins game on sunday. monika? >> thank you so much, olga. good morning, everybody. well, overall the beltway is looking great. volumes are really light but a lot of people will be back to work today. that means things could change very quickly. if you're just heading out the

door, it's a good time to do that. no issues through cheverly on the bw parkway, route 50, inside the beltway. route 50 looks good coming in from annapolis and the bw parkway in from greenbelt. let's take a live look at the beltway in college park up above as you travel down and looking down at the beltway, things look good through route 1 heading for the 495 interchange. 95 looks good from baltimore as well by the way as you head for the beltway. let's go back to the maps, this time all the way out west. no problems on 66 as you come in from manassas. the toll road coming in from sterling, herndon all the way to tysons corner and the beltway is good between the american legion bridge and annandale. let's take a live look at 66 coming from centreville and manassas. this is what it looks like nice and quiet all the way into fairfax and 495. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 4:55. back to you. >> thanks, monika. 4:48 now. many of us, we all start the new year with jeez, i need to lose some weight. i've got to drop some pounds. millions of americans say the

same thing. we count calories, troy to avoid sweets. >> while all of those things do matter, doctors say there's one ingredient most of us ignore which can quickly sabotage our diets. anita brikman has more. >> reporter: when most of us think about eating too much salt, the shaker is what we think of but table salt only accounts for about 6% of our daily intake. most of the salt we eat we never see and that's what often leaves us feeling hungrier and heavier. >> 77% of the sodium in our diet comes from processed food. and that's what people have to realize. >> reporter: martha is a cardiologist at the ohio state university westler medical center. she says when we eat too much salt, we retain water which adds weight. but beyond that, excess salt actually makes you hungrier. if you're not careful, you can eat a lot without a lot of effort. >> most restaurants, that would be about 5,000 milligrams of

sodium. >> reporter: that's more than twice the recommended amount for an entire day. but it's not the only place salt is hiding. even fresh cut meat can contain extra salt often just to make it look better. >> at the grocery store, often they inject sodium into it to make it plumper. they make a mixture of water and salt to make it look better on the grocery shelf. >> reporter: even fruits and vegetables can contain excess sodium, especially if they're canned. that's a lesson rob learned the hard way. after living with hypertension and surviving a heart attack, she reads the label on everything she buys and cuts out all the salt she can. >> i had to cut out fast food. i had to learn how to go to the store, buy fresh fruits and vegetables and prepare them at home. >> reporter: anita brikman, 9news now. >> in addition to adding water weight, eating too much salt has also been linked to weaker bones and more severe asthma in men. if it tastes good, apparently it's bad for you.

>> we know that. >> there's a type of sugar that is everywhere in the american diet that also may make it harder to stay slim. sign tises used some imaging tests that suggest that fructose can trigger brain changes that are tied to overeating. the study of 20 normal weight people with m.r.i.s found that after drinking a fructose beverage, their brain doesn't register feeling full like it does when you have simple sugars. fructose is added to a lot of processed foods and drinks. if you want to lose weight in the new year, you are not alone. there's a new interactive poll of more than 3,000 adults and that shows the top new year's resolution for americans in 2013 is to cut the pounds. the other top resolutions include exercise and improving finances and getting a new job. >> we talked yesterday that it's improving education and scholarships. a new study also finds smoking can affect veins in the legs, even a year after a person quits. researchers in china looked at more than 200 patients who had

heart bypass operations. surgeons graphed leg veins from patients to use in the hearts. veins from smokers did not normalize even a year after quitting. many times the veins failed in the heart. new research shows there's no link between taking antidepress sanities during pregnancy and infant -- antidepressants during pregnancy and infant death. swedish researchers studied 30,000 women. there was no increase risked of having stillborn babies or babies who later died. did you know you can be fired for refusing to get a flu shot? it happened to six workers at a hospital in goshen, indiana. the hospital's parent company requires all workers to get the shot. the fired nurses say the shots interfere with their religious beliefs. they also want control over what goes into their bodies.
